DRE Symptomatology Matrix — Observable Indicators

Rows 1–4 are the ARIDE roadside set. Rows 5–9 require the DRE dark-room exam and vital-sign instruments. In school you must reproduce all 63 cells on a blank chart from memory — use the Matrix Drill tab.

Footnotes from the handout: (1) Soma, Quaaludes and some antidepressants usually dilate. (2) ETOH, Quaaludes and some antidepressants may elevate. (3) Certain psychedelic amphetamines may cause slowing. (4) Inhalant pupils possibly dilated. (5) BP down with anesthetic gases, up with volatile solvents and aerosols. (6) Cannabis pupils possibly normal.

How to hold it in your head

The UP groupStimulants · Hallucinogens · Dissociative Anesthetics — all three vitals UP, muscle tone RIGID. The body is revved; everything rises and stiffens.
The DOWN groupCNS Depressants · Narcotic Analgesics — pulse and BP DOWN, tone FLACCID. Everything falls and goes slack. Depressant temp is NORMAL — only narcotics drop temperature.
The oddballsInhalants are erratic by design (BP and temp either way, tone normal or flaccid). Cannabis raises pulse and BP but leaves temp and tone normal.
DIDHGN (and VGN at high dose) appears in exactly three categories: Depressants, Inhalants, Dissociative Anesthetics — and nothing else.
DIDCLOC = the DID three plus Cannabis. Cannabis is the only category with LOC and no HGN — that pairing is the cannabis signature.
CASH makes big eyesDilated pupils: Cannabis · (Amphetamines) Stimulants · Hallucinogens. Only Narcotic Analgesics constrict — pinpoint with little or no reaction to light.
Two hard rules from class: nothing reverses HGN once present (no antagonistic effect), and VGN never appears without at least 4 HGN clues — VGN alone means a procedural error or a medical issue, not a finding.

Lower half — recognition rows

General indicators, duration, administration, and overdose signs. These are recall-by-recognition: you match what you observed. Full 91-cell chart is also drilled in school.

Blank Matrix Drill — reproduce all 63 cells

Click a cell and pick the value. Practice grades each answer the moment you pick it — green if right, red with the correction if wrong. Test is school conditions: fill all 63, then hit Check. Every run and every miss is saved to your Progress tab.

For paper practice, keep printing the blank drill pages in your DRE_Matrix_Study_Sheet.pdf — school makes you write it out by hand.

Quiz

Randomized questions across the matrix, mnemonics, polydrug rules, the 12-step process, vital ranges, and category tells. Explanations cite where the fact lives in your notes.

The 12-Step DRE Evaluation

Standardized and systematic — always the same order. Memorize it cold before school. Pulse is taken three times: steps 3, 6, and 9.

    Order Drill

Tap the steps in the correct order. A wrong pick flashes red and counts as a miss.

DRE Normal Ranges (dark-room & vitals)

Learn these now — they anchor rows 4–9 of the matrix. Values per the NHTSA DRE curriculum.

    MeasureNormal range
    Pulse rate60–90 bpm
    Blood pressureSystolic 120–140 · Diastolic 70–90 mmHg
    Body temperature98.6°F ± 1°
    Pupils — room light2.5 – 5.0 mm
    Pupils — near total darkness5.0 – 8.5 mm
    Pupils — direct light2.0 – 4.5 mm
Dark-room exam checks pupil size under three lighting conditions with a pupillometer, plus reaction to light, and the nasal/oral cavities for ingestion evidence. Ranges are the DRE averages — document the measured value, not just "dilated."

Polydrug — the four interaction effects

    EffectRuleExample
    Null0 + 0 = 0Cannabis + fentanyl: neither causes HGN → no HGN
    Overlapping1 + 0 = 1Alcohol (HGN) + cannabis (none) → HGN present from alcohol
    Additive1 + 1 = 2+Alcohol + cannabis both cause LOC → stronger LOC; cannabis + stimulant → "dinner plate" pupils
Antagonisticopposites = unpredictableSpeedball (stimulant + narcotic): pupils depend on the dominant drug and can shift during the stop
Alcohol is the #1 mixer. In Arizona post-legalization, alcohol-plus-cannabis DUIs outnumber straight cannabis DUIs. Strong impairment on a low PBT (.03–.04) = suspect a second substance immediately.

    Medical conditions that mimic impairment

    ConditionThe tell
Head traumaAsymmetry — unequal pupils, unequal tracking, one-sided droop
StrokeOne-sided deficits · FAST: Face, Arms, Speech, Time
DiabetesClammy, confused, fruity/acetone breath — call 9-1-1; sugar normalizes a diabetic, never a drunk
ShockDazed, uncoordinated, non-responsive — medical emergency
MS / neuro disordersAtaxia, tremors, slurred speech — but subject stays ALERT
Mental healthAnxiety mimics stimulants; depression mimics depressants; may coexist with impairment
Ask the eye/health questions BEFORE HGN. Pre-checks — equal pupils, equal tracking, no resting nystagmus — are what separate medical from impairment.

    The road to certification

    1. DRE Pre-School (2 days / 16 hrs)SFST proficiency verified; intro to the 12-step process and the matrix. Your instructors said it plainly: show up with the matrix already memorized.
    2. DRE School (7 days / 56 hrs)The academic block — all seven categories in depth, physiology, vital signs, dark-room exams. Ends with a comprehensive written exam and reproducing the matrix from a blank chart.
    3. Certification phase (field evaluations)Supervised evaluations on live subjects (minimum 12, hitting at least 3 of the 7 categories, with a 75%+ toxicological corroboration rate), a final knowledge exam, and instructor sign-off. Recertify every two years.
Standards are set by the IACP with NHTSA. Details vary slightly by state coordinator — confirm specifics with the Arizona DRE coordinator when you're slotted for the September school.
